DONNA DARLENE - CAREER CHRONOLOGY

LEFT: Buddy Spicher and Donna ca. April, 1958
RIGHT: Donna and Shot in the late 1960s

Donna Joyce "Darlene" was born November 29, 1938 in Kane, Pennsylvania and growing up in St. Maryís, Pennsylvania.
In the early 1950s, Donna played with a group of friends that included Judy Lee (Alice Schreiber), Betty Schreiber, and brothers Buddy and Bobby Spicher. In spite of having two guys in the group they called themselves the Golden West Girls.
Donna first came onto the country music scene in 1955, in Wheeling, West Virginia, where she was a part of the Dusty Owens and his Rodeo Boys show.
During a tour in 1955 to Canada with the Dusty Owens show, Donna Darlene was married in Sydney, Nova Scotia to Buddy Spicher. It was told that she was pregnant and Dusty insisted on them getting married. On their show in Truro, Nova Scotia they were congratulated on stage. A daughter, Suzette, is mentioned in Buddy Spicherís biography on Wikipedia.
On January 4, 1956 she was part of a Grand Ole Opry show at the Sports Arena, Toledo, Ohio. The show featured such artists as Little Jimmy Dickens and his Country Boys Band, Miss Del Wood, the Louvin Brothers, Cousin Jody and His Country Cousins. It also featured Dusty Owens and his WWVA Jamboree Show with Donna Darlene, Lazy Jim Day, and Buddy Spicher.
In January, 1956, she did a duet with Dusty on his legendary "Once More" song that he wrote, with "It's Goodbye And So Long" on the flip side. It was released on Admiral 45-1000. She also released solo recordings on the same label, later in 1956. Admiral Records was owned by Dusty Owens.
Cowboy Songs magazine mentions her and Dusty in an article about the 30th anniversary of the WWVA Jamboree in 1957.
In 1959-1960, she was featured on "Country Music Time", a Nashville radio program made for the U.S. Air Force and hosted by Jim Reeves. On show #112 Donna sang "Yes, Thereís A Reason". On show #127, Cowboy Jack Clement, a member of the Country Music Hall Of Fame, introduced her and she sang "I Canít Stop Loving You".
In the Summer of 1960 "Worldís Original Jamboree", WWVA concluded a 40-day trek (for International Theatrical Productions) with artists like Bob Perry, Hylo Brown & the Timberliners, Donna Darlene, and Jimmy Martin & the Sunny Mountain Boys. Headlining the show were Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, Mac Wiseman, and Rusty & Doug. Attendance was strong in most spots.
Donnaís second marriage was to Doug Kershaw. They had two sons, Doug Kershaw, Jr. and Victor Kershaw.
In 1964 Donna recorded a single for the independent Kapp Records.
Donna met and married her third husband, Harold Bradley "Shot" Jackson (1920-1991), after bringing one of her guitars in for repairs. Shot also designed and manufactured guitars and pedal steel guitars under the name Sho-Bud. They later were on two separate shows, Shot with Roy Acuff and the Smoky Mountain Boys, and Donna working with an all-girl band at the famous Golden Nugget in Las Vegas. They had a daughter named Shotsie Jackson.
In addition to the Opry each weekend, Shot would occasionally tour with Opry acts. On one such tour in July of 1965, Shot and Roy Acuff were involved in a near fatal two-car collision near Sparta, TN while driving back to Nashville. Roy was driving a Chrysler LeBaron and Shot was in the passenger seat in front. Shot suffered 23 broken ribs, a brain concussion, fractured skull, and a broken palate. He was in a coma for a week and was laid up for a long time. Roy Acuff, was injured as well but his injuries were not as serious as Shotís were.
Shot did recover and he and Donna started to play music and tour together until he suffered a major stroke in 1983.
In the Autumn of 1965 Donna recorded a second single for Kapp Records. One of the songs, "Gonna Be More Lovin'", is a vocal duet with Shot.
They performed in Germany (1965).
In 1966 Donna and Shot performed at the Edison in Canada along with Bob Lucier, Billy Adams, Loretta Drew, Warren Robb, Jerry Lee Legacy and Mickey McGivern & the Mustangs. Arc Records released an album from that show. Arc also recorded a studio album with Donna and Shot, and one with Bob Lucier and Shot.
Shot and Donna performed in the Caribbean (1968).
An instrumental album, "Beautiful Waltz Melodies", was made for Uncle Jim O'Neal's Rural Rhythm Records with Shot Jackson (dobro), Donna Darlene (guitar), Tater Tate (fiddle), Pat Starr (piano) and John Palmer (bass). It was released in 1968.
In 1968-69 Donna recorded four singles with Shot on Stop Records of Nashville (founded by Pete Drake).
In the 1970s she recorded a single for Little Richie, which was released on Appaloosa Records.
Josh Graves (dobro player) talked with Smiley Bates (country singer, songwriter, and musician) about music, Josh invited Smiley to go to Nashville and record with him. At that time, Smiley being under contract, he was not authorized to say yes or no, but more important he said "I have been a Canadian recording artist always, and what I have done with record sales has been totally in Canada, with Canadian musicians. If American artists want me to record with them, they are welcome to come to Canada and Iíll be happy to work with them!" ... and later they did. In 1974 the record company brought Shot Jackson, his wife Donna Darlene, and Benny Martin from Nashville to do some sessions. Shot recorded an album with Bob Lucier titled "Sail Along". Donna Darlene had minor hits with "Welcome To The Other Side of Me" and "Make An Honest Woman Out Of Me" (No trace of this one - can anyone help?), and Benny Martin recorded an album titled "Nashville Southern Fiddle". Benny had heard of Smiley and asked if he would play flat top guitar. Smiley agreed. That album has become a classic, as has the Shot Jackson/Bob Lucier album.
In 1974 Donna recorded an album for Marathon Records, Canada - the songs were later released on two CD's by Rosedale Records of Canada in 1985 and later.
In 1977 another album was recorded for the Canadians, this time released on Cheyenne Records, and later re-released on Rosedale Records (with three additional songs). The same year she recorded a single for Little Richie Records.
It is believed that Shot and Donna cut an album, "Home Away From Home", with Cousin Jody McCauley, Roy Acuff and Billy Grammer in 1977.
In 1978-79, Shot and Donna did several shows with Cousin Jody. He also played together with them in June 1979 on WSM's Grand Ole Opry, sponsored by Sho-Bud.
In 1979 Donna signed with Colonel Buster Doss and his Stardust Records. We think the first result was a single on Wizard, one of his labels.
Also in 1979 the obscure Neron label released a single with "Biggest Thing In Vegas". The same title are on the Irish label Top Spin Records. At the moment unknown if it's 2 different recordings.
Shot and Donna performed in Ireland (1980). During that visit Donna recorded an album released on Top Spin Records - a Top Rank label.
In 1981-82 she recorded two singles for Charta Records.
Shot retired in June of 1983, at the age of 62. He and Donna had planned to keep on performing, but on a limited scale. Shortly after his retirement though, on August 21, 1983, Shot Jackson suffered a major stroke, only two months after selling his guitar repair business. He never fully recovered his speech nor his ability to play an instrument. He and Donna had been planning to go to Japan but the stroke changed all that. Shot and Donna continued to live at their home in Antioch, TN, just southeast of Nashville. He loved to garden and visit with his many friends he made through the years.
Shot Jackson suffered another stroke in 1990 and died on January 24, 1991.
In 1998-99 Donna recorded an album, "By Request", released in 2000. The album features a duet by Donna and Rooster Quantrell and one by Donna and Kirby "Sky King" Grant. The album also contains two earlier recordings, "Testing 1-2-3" with Shot Jackson (dobro), and "Hide And Go Cheat (#2)" featuring Pete Drake (steel guitar).
Several of Donnaís songs released on Stardust compilations are also on several other Canadian label albums. Itís not clear whether those on Stardust contains the same recordings as the Canadian or if they are new recordings.
What is clear is that Stardust did re-record some earlier songs done by Donna, as well as recorded some completely new songs.
As late as 2012 Donna recorded a gospel album, containing harmony vocals by her daughter Shotsie.
Donna Darlene is still alive and doing well, and she performs now and then at the age of 75, and if everything goes according to plan, she will be appearing at the International Steel Guitar Convention in 2014 (as she have done since the 1970s).
Strange to note how Donna has been overlooked by country music lovers in the U.S., but has been embraced by Canadians and Europeans - she really should have been the 1960-70s Queen of Traditional Country Music!!!
