BUDGET LABELS & TRIBUTE ALBUMS TO HANK WILLIAMS

MODERN RECORDS

The Modern label was formed in 1945 in Los Angeles, California, by Saul and Jules Bihari. Modern recorded rhythm & blues, country & western, jazz, popular, blues, and gospel. The subsidiary RPM was formed in 1950 and released blues, jazz, rhythm & blues and rock & roll. The subsidiary Crown was formed in 1954 and after three years (starting in 1957), was used only for budget priced albums. The Flair Records was launched in the early 1950s. The Riviera label subsidiary was a budget label that operated in 1959. The Kent label subsidiary was formed in 1958 and issued only singles, but the name was used again from 1965 to 1971 for album issues. All of these labels were very much a family affair, as the President of all the labels was Saul Bihari, his brothers Jules and Joe served as Vice Presidents, and brother Lester was head of Sales and Promotion. At the Modern, RPM and Crown labels, A&R was handled by Joe and Jules Bihari, Maxwell Davis, Austin McCoy, Jake Porter, Lester Sill and Ike Turner.

CROWN RECORDS

Crown Records was a budget label for the Bihari Brothers, who ran the Modern and RPM labels. Crown started in December, 1953, with four artist signings (including Joe Houston), as the Bihari Brothers' R&B label, but they didn't release albums on Crown until 1957. In March, 1957, Saul Bihari announced that Modern and RPM albums would be discontinued and reissued on the Crown label at $1.98 per album. Later in the year, the price dropped to $1.49 per album to compete with budget labels like Tops, and the next year stereo albums on red vinyl were introduced, priced at $2.98. As a label, Crown has a mixed reputation. Many of their albums contain early rock and roll or jazz and are sought after by collectors. On the other hand, Crown put out a lot of schmaltz, knockoffs, and otherwise forgettable music, all packaged in cheap covers, giving Crown the "other" reputation as the King of junk labels. Unfortunately for record collectors, these quality releases soon deteriorated when the Biharis started putting all of their energy into the Crown budget album line in 1957. After the initial 25 or so Crown album releases (which were reissues of their earlier Modern and RPM albums), the goal of the Crown line seemed to be "How cheap can you make the record?" The covers were two pieces of thin cardboard held together with the paper cover, with no liner notes, and no record inner paper or plastic sleeves were used. Many had only 10 songs rather than the standard 12. The vinyl on these reissues was thin, and many have manufacturing defects. We have heard that the Biharis even tried to make the vinyl go farther by mixing sand with the vinyl for filler during the pressing process. Whether this is true is debatable, but many Crown albums are so poorly manufactured that they may as well have sand on their surface.

DESIGN RECORDS

Design Records was a division of Pickwick Sales of New York, later Pickwick International. The first albums under the Design imprint came out in 1957. Originally, the label packaging was done in accord with industry norms, with decent vinyl, reasonably good jackets with full color covers, titles on the spine, and liner notes on the back. Within just a few years, this had deteriorated to noisy vinyl with lots of bumps and lumps, jackets made of two pieces of cardboard held together by the generic paper jacket back, and a front slick. In other words, "budget" (i.e., "cheap") all the way.

BRAVO RECORDS

Bravo Records was a label of Pickwick Sales, later Pickwick International, and manufactured by the K.M. Corporation (probably the Keel Manufacturing Corporation), a part of the Pickwick empire. It was originally in Freeport, Long Island, New York. The series started at number K-100, and ran to number 158. At that point, the label name changed to International Award Series, perhaps due to a conflict with another label with the same name.

INTERNATIONAL AWARD SERIES RECORDS

International Award Series Records was a division of the K.M. (Keel manufacturing) Corporation, which originally was in Freeport, Long Island, New York. KM was Pickwick's manufacturing arm. The International Award Series label was originally the Bravo label, but about at catalog number 159, Pickwick changed the label name. The albums issued on International Award before catalog number 159 are reissues of the Bravo albums.

HURRAH RECORDS

Hurrah Records was a division of the K.M. Corporation, which originally was in Freeport, Long Island, NY. The K.M. Corporation was one of the companies used by Pickwick International to distribute their records. K.M. also was listed as distributing the International Award Series label. The product issued on Hurrah was made up of reissues of earlier albums on Pickwick's other labels, particularly Design and International Award. All the issues on Hurrah were released in 1962 and 1963 initially, and all used a generic jacket back which had a discography of the first 24 albums. Mono albums had a mono discography (using the H- prefix), while stereo albums had a stereo discography using the HS- prefix.

GRAND PRIX SERIES RECORDS

Grand Prix Series Records was Pickwick reissue label, and existed from the early to mid-1960s. Initially, Grand Prix was used to reissue most or all of the albums that had previously been released on the Bravo and International Award labels. The Grand Prix Series used the same catalog numbers as the Bravo/International Award releases, and even used the same K- and KS- prefixes of the Bravo label. Occasionally, the Grand Prix Series used different artists names or different album titles, and occasionally a different front cover slick, but the music in the grooves was the same. Generally, the only differences between the Bravo, International Award, and Grand Prix releases with the same catalog numbers was the logo on the front and the generic album back cover.

HARMONY RECORDS

Harmony was Columbia's budget label. The albums began in 1957, around the time that budget independents such as Tops, Crown, and Design (Pickwick) were starting to issue albums. The Harmony product, in some ways, was very similar to those labels. None had album cover spines; the covers were made from two pieces of thin cardboard held together by the paper slicks. The Harmony albums, however, held together better. Tops, Crown and Design sold for $1.49 each; Harmony sold for $1.98. All three sometimes were sold in polyethylene bags with the price boldly shown. All offered a wide variety of musical genres.

But the similarity ended there. While Tops, Crown and Design often were pressed on inferior vinyl, Harmony albums were pressed, at least initially, on the same quality vinyl used for Columbia product. The artists on Harmony tended to be Columbia's artists, not bands hired for the album or old masters from questionable sources. The Harmony albums, unlike the others, sometimes were packaged with an inner sleeve.

In the late 1950s, Harmony began experimenting with pressings on polystyrene, probably as a cost saving measure, but later reverted to vinyl.

The Viking label was among the cheapest of the cheap budget labels, but it sometimes put out some very good music by accident! Viking was trying to cash in on the folk craze and other styles, but Viking wasn't known for quality pressings!

WYNCOTE RECORDS

In 1964, Cameo-Parkway, 309 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107, started Wyncote, a budget label subsidiary named for a Philadelphia suburb, to reissue their large back catalog. The product on Wyncote was very typical of budget label of the 1960s. Record jackets were inexpensively made and tended toward falling apart easily, there was no inner paper or plastic sleeves for the albums, and there were usually only nine or ten tracks on each album. Many times the artists names weren't even given. Far worse, though, was the substandard vinyl pressings which were noisy and had many bumps. The vinyl on some of the early Wyncote albums could only be described as pathetic, with blisters, peels and bumps abounding. After the first few issues, they settled down to a vinyl quality that was passable, but not much more. These records were mainly distributed in department stores.

THE DEEPER LABEL INFO ABOVE IS TAKEN FROM ALBUM DISCOGRAPHIES - THANKS!

CURLEY WILLIAMS (see Wikipedia for a small bio) recorded around 30 songs for the Bihari Brothers in the late 1950s. The Biharis offered their artists a flat fee for recording - no royalties and presented the outcome under many fake names - a school for many other budget labels.

The Biharis also leased recorded material to many budget labels, and the Curley Williams' recordings became the base for 30 (or more) albums listed above. He recorded 16 Hank Williams songs and 10 well-known country & western classics, all mixed and presented under various album titles.

The budget releases in most cases lured the record buying public with Hank Williams' name heading the front covers. Several of the albums did not even use a fake artist name, but simply did not credit any artist at all. The sale figures for these "wonders" can only be a guess, but there's a lot of them offered today for sale and auctions on the net to collectors.

In later years many digital releases of the above recorded material (and some new ones) have been presented, and available to buy on the net:
